Best Time to Visit Bhutan

The best time to travel to Bhutan depends on your interests:

Spring (March–May): Popular season. Lush rhododendron forests, pleasant weather and colorful religious festivals.

Summer/Monsoon (June–August): Low season. Green valleys, peaceful atmosphere and tranquility. Expect daily rain showers, reduced overland transport and very few tourists.

Autumn (September–November): Most popular season. Clear skies, excellent trekking conditions, and popular festivals such as Paro and Thimphu Tshechu.

Winter (December–February): Sunny but cool days, fewer tourists, great for photography and bird-watching.

Bhutan Visa & Entry Requirements

Visitors to Bhutan require a Bhutan visa. The application is simple, processed by Travel Himalaya on your behalf and approval is granted electronically (as PDF). Visitors can enter Bhutan either via Paro International Airport or through designated land borders with India.

Flights to Bhutan

Most travellers arrive by air at Paro International Airport, Bhutan’s only international airport. Two airlines —Drukair (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and Bhutan Airlines — operate flights connecting Paro with major hubs such as Dubai, Quatar, Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu, Dhaka and Singapore. The flight into Paro is an unforgettable experience, often described as one of the world’s most scenic approaches. Overland entry is possible from India through Phuentsholing, Gelephu or Samdrup Jongkhar.

What is Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee?

Tourism in Bhutan is regulated through the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). Currently, the SDF is USD 100 per person per night. This compulsory Government tax is part of Bhutan’s “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy and helps Bhutan maintain its status as a carbon-negative country, protect its forests, preserve cultural heritage and improve infrastructure for locals and tourists alike.
